Authenticity testing

Identification of tuna species in a fresh/frozen fish sample, salad (but too much vinegar can hamper DNA analytic) or on (frozen) pizza (all tuna species possible).

Canned tuna authenticity

Differentiation between Katsuwonus pelamis and Thunnus spp. This test is highly recommended for canned tuna samples where DNA quality and quantity is low due to sample processing.

Fish species detection (qualitative) 11 species

The test is applied on fish and fish products, e.g. fish burger and fingers, as well as on processed food, e.g. ready meals, protein powder, trace samples and feed, to detect the animal source it was produced from.

Real-time PCR assays highly specific for the species Norway and Atlantic Pollock (Theragra chalcogramma, Theragra finnmarchica; taxonomically the same species), Salmon (Salmo salar), Shark Catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus), Pink Salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha), Coho Salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch),  Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), Haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus), Pacific Cod (Gadus macrocephalus), Atlantic Cod (Gadus morhua) and Saithe (Pollachius virens) are applied to detect the presence of these animal species.

Fish authenticity using NGS

Metabarcoding analysis of food and feed samples by Next Generation Sequencing to detect all fishes present in a sample without necessary prior knowledge about expected species.

This approach is suitable for complex mixtures of different species (> 2 up to unlimited), e.g. present in fish meals / fish balls / feed / other complex fish mixtures, etc.

This service includes:

  • DNA extraction from complex fish products
  • One quality check per DNA sample by quantitative real-time PCR (Mito-PCR animal DNA)
  • Generation of 2 amplicons per DNA sample (CytB, 16S),  + H2O control
  • Sequencing of the amplicons on MiSeq
  • Basic bioinformatical analysis (sorting of reads according to inline barcodes)
  • Advanced bioinformatical analysis for taxonomical read assignment and species determination
  • Individual reporting
